SUMMARY:Bee Encounter at Rippon Lodge
DESCRIPTION:Learn About Bees at the Bee Encounter at Rippon Lodge \nHumans have been keeping bees for thousands of years to help pollinate food plants. The tradition continues at Rippon Lodge where people will have the chance to observe the lodge’s beehives and learn about the practice of beekeeping. \nDuring the Bee Encounter at Rippon Lodge\, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Aug. 7\, visitors to the historic property\, at 15520 Blackburn Road in Woodbridge\, will have the chance to learn about the history of beekeeping and the intriguing life of bees. “It’s going to be a lot of fun\,” said Rippon Historic Site Manager Jessica Alicea. “We’re hoping to engage families and encourage people to plant more bee-friendly gardens at home. We have little pots with seeds for them to take home and plant in the springtime.” \nPeople who attend the event will have the opportunity to see bees at work making honey and feeding the queen. Experts will be on hand to talk one-on-one with visitors about bees and other insect pollinators. “They can actually look at a hive in the observation container\,” Alicea said. “We have beekeeper outfits\, and if people want to try them on and see how they feel\, they can. The team from Environmental Services Division Mosquito and Forest Pest Management will also be coming and talking about other pollinator insects in Prince William County.” \nYoungsters who visit Rippon Lodge will receive take-home projects as well\, Alicea said. “We’re going to have a lot of crafts and activities for the kids that are bee-related.” \nThe aim of the event is to make people aware of the role bees play. “We hope they come to understand why bees and all of our pollinators are so important to our ecosystem and what a crucial role they play into plants growing\,” Alicea said. “Without pollinators we won’t have food to eat. They’re very critical to the environment.” \nPre-register at Bee Encounter at Rippon Lodge. Admission is $10 per person for people 15 and older. Admission includes tours of the lodge. \nMasks are strongly encouraged. \n

SUMMARY:Free Suicide Prevention Training: Question\, Persuade\, Refer
DESCRIPTION:Question\, Persuade\, Refer (QPR)\nSuicide Prevention Training\nQPR stands for Question\, Persuade\, and Refer — the 3 simple yet powerful steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. Just as people trained in CPR help save thousands of lives each year\, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question\, persuade\, and refer someone to the help they need. Each year\, thousands of Americans\, like you\, are saying “Yes” to saving the life of a friend\, colleague\, sibling\, or neighbor by becoming a part of the QPR life-saving network. \nQPR can be learned in our 90-minute Gatekeeper training course. Gatekeepers can be anyone including parents\, friends\, neighbors\, teachers\, ministers\, doctors\, nurses\, office supervisors\, police officers\, volunteer coaches\, youth organization leaders\, caseworkers\, firefighters\, and many others who are strategically positioned to recognize and refer someone at risk of suicide. \nAs a QPR-trained Gatekeeper you will learn to:\n• Recognize the warning signs of suicide\n• Ask tough questions and offer hope\n• Get help and save a life \nThe Community Services Behavioral Health Wellness Team is offering QPR trainings throughout the year to assist our residents in helping others and broaden our QPR Network across Greater Prince William.
Now\, more than ever\, it is important to reach out to our friends\, family members\, neighbors\, and colleagues to engage in health promotion and suicide prevention conversations. \nPlease use the links below to register for an upcoming QPR training. \nTuesday\, May 11 at 6:00 pm\nhttps://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJErd-yopz4tGdJeoQCYPHaeAcb4-tDQe7E7 \nMonday\, May 24 at 10:30 am\nhttps://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJIqdO2sqjovGd0zwFpuws6_LlmQH9OVo-GE \nSaturday\, June 5 at 9:30 am\nhttps://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJ0vce6gqzgrGNZWshjAG81wEK04NqaMi53d \nFriday\, June 11 at 1:00 pm\nhttps://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJYtd-mgqzopGdd2Q9CXgZIS80wQBAj8LJD7 \nWednesday\, June 23 at 4:30 pm\nhttps://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJ0ucu2sqjwpEtyZyx92IlFUwpmKo81nouu6 \nThursday\, July 1 at 10:00 am\nhttps://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJApdO-pqT4tHd3Gb1tNL0zXGu50WPuTkq9T \nFor more information contact Heather Martinsen at 571-641-7019 or HMartinsen@pwcgov.org
