SUMMARY:Kingian Nonviolence Conflict Reconciliation Briefing Session/Training
DESCRIPTION:UNITY IN THE COMMUNITY \nINVITES THE PUBLIC \nSUNDAY\, APRIL 18 \n6:30p-8:30p \nTO A VIRTUAL TRAINING \nBASED ON \nKINGIAN 6 PRACTICES \n \n  \nWHAT IS KINGIAN NONVIOLENCE? \nKingian Nonviolence Conflict Reconciliation is an approach to conflict and community leadership that offers values and methods useful for anyone who wants to use conflict constructively in their personal life\, in group settings\, or in community issues and building a reconciled world. \nKingian Nonviolence workshops are transformational experiences that have helped thousands of people around the world understand the depth of the philosophy of nonviolence and learn to begin to bring the practices into their lives and their work. Whether you are an organizer working for social change\, a teacher trying to change the culture of your school\, or simply an individual trying to deal with the conflicts in your personal life\, each person will walk away from our workshops with new skills and a new perspective. \nKingian Nonviolence is rooted in the philosophy and leadership of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. and the leadership of the U.S. Civil Rights Movement. The curriculum was codified by Rev. Dr. Bernard LaFayette\, Jr.\, and David Jehnsen\, both of whom served on Dr. King’s staff in the 1960s\, and who sought to make lessons and tools from the Kingian legacy and the Civil Rights Movement period available for\npeople to address today’s conflicts\, concerns\, and conditions. \nThis two-hour event via Zoom will provide an initial introduction to the Kingian Nonviolence approach. \nFacilitators: Matt Guynn\, director of organizing\, On Earth Peace; Pam Smith\, executive director\, Addie Wyatt Center for Nonviolence Training \nPlease email UnityInTheCommunity20100@gmail.com for more information and registration\n  \nClick on the link to REGISTER \nhttps://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfLpRrbcuxhmgGmBQheRH0gXNIlh_d29Xjt-C-4j3sfNfXJFw/viewform?usp=pp_url

SUMMARY:Transit and Communities—Impacts and Land Use with Dr. Bob Schneider\, Executive Director\, OmniRide
DESCRIPTION:Transit and Communities—Impacts and Land Use\nwith Dr. Bob Schneider\, Executive Director\, OmniRide\nThursday\, March 25\, 7pm. Register here.\n \n  \nWe are connected to our family\, friends\, neighbors\, and our greater community by roads\, trails\, sidewalks\, and bike lanes. They get us from where we live to where we work and play. This connectivity is what builds communities. Public transportation connects all of these resources and helps provide access for so many different people and for many different needs. \nThe challenge is that much of transit’s success is shaped by land use\, density\, and infrastructure: like a fruit topping poured onto the cake after it has been baked and cooled. What happens when transit is a key ingredient and is baked into the product? What does that look like and what does that mean for a community? \nIn this discussion\, we will hear from Dr. Bob Schneider\, Executive Director of OmniRide\, who will give us an overview of the organization\, its services\, and the challenges the greater Prince William area faces as we look to improve our transportation options\, especially in the area of mass transit and general public transportation. \n \nWith a presentation that will cover both macro and micro issues—including the impacts of the pandemic on transportation as a whole—Dr. Schneider will help provide a different perspective on the struggles and opportunities for transit in the Prince William Community.

SUMMARY:Gourds to Tools: Crafting Crops into Dishes
DESCRIPTION:Gourds to Tools: Crafting Crops into Dishes \n10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.; $5 per person\, free for children under six \nIt has been said that early Americans not only grew their own food but also their own dishes! Gourds were used often as bowls\, dippers\, cups as well as shelters to attract birds that were essential for insect control in agrarian habitats. Join us as we turn the gourds that were grown in the garden last summer into functional tools that will be used to enhance the interpretation at Ben Lomond. Masks are required when indoors and are recommended when outdoors. \nBen Lomond Historic Site\, 10321 Sudley Manor Drive\, Manassas\, VA 703-367-7872.
