DESCRIPTION:RELIC will host Buffalo Soldiers During the Civil War. The program uses experts in military history and reenactments to talk about the 200\,000 black soldiers who served in the Federal Army during the Civil War. After the war\, the soldiers\, called Buffalo Soldiers\, decided not to return to a life of sharecropping and racial oppression. Instead\, they decided to remain with the U.S. Army and battle outlaws and Indian raiders along the western frontier.

DESCRIPTION:RELIC’s Don Wilson will talk about African American Genealogy: Tracking Families Before the Civil War to show how to find information regarding an African American family’s history prior to 1865. There are special challenges to finding family documentation during the age of slavery since few records were kept. Wilson will use a case study approach to demonstrate how to identify resources that can be used to trace lives and relationships.
