SUMMARY:Our Wild Neighbors: Researching the Flora and Fauna of Prince William Forest Park
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by Prince William Conservation Alliance\, National Park Conservation Association\, Mid County Civic Association\, and Prince William Wildflower Society. \nOnline via Zoom – Register at us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/Ca7-hZkHT5OKeY6TloT7HQ \nPrince William County is a premier destination for residents across the region to delight in nature\, with two national parks within this ecologically diverse county! They provide vital resources for our community’s physical and mental health\, quality habitat for wildlife\, and protection for stream quality in critical waterways. \nPrince William Forest Park\, for example\, on the county’s southeastern edge\, protects roughly 15\,000 acres of mainly Piedmont forest. This is the largest Piedmont forest in the national park system and provides a home to over 250 species of animals and 900 species of plants. From black bears and elusive freshwater sponges to towering trees and the easily overlooked\, federally threatened small whorled pogonia\, diverse flora and fauna welcome over 250\,000 park visitors annually. Whether taking a walk in the woods to unwind from a long week\, birdwatching for the pure enjoyment of hide-and-seek\, or bike riding along the scenic drive to breathe in fresh air while pushing yourself to go farther\, the park offers rich experiences for all. \nBut wait\, there’s more! The park also provides the opportunity for scientists to study healthy ecosystems. With habitats globally becoming increasingly fragmented due to development pressure\, research opportunities are shrinking. Prince William Forest Park is facing similar pressure. Much of the land around its border was formerly protected by the Rural Crescent (the county’s urban growth boundary). Now\, without that policy\, projects like La Benison and Potomac Technology Park are moving in\, weakening the park’s ability to maintain all the services it provides to the community. \nAs part of the ongoing series\, Places Worth Protecting\, attend an evening to explore foundational research being done thanks to the park and celebrate the knowledge gained as a result. Learn about: \n\n\nSmall Whorled Pogonia (Flora): Melissa McCormick\, Smithsonian Environmental Research Center \n\n\nCharacterizing Deadwood (Flora): Dasha Maslyukova\, Virginia Tech \n\n\nFreshwater Sponge (Fauna): Colin Wang\, William & Mary \n\n\nAt-Risk Turtles (Fauna): Elizabeth Hunter\, Virginia Tech \n\n\nOpening remarks will be provided by Kristi Shelton\, PWFP biologist. Learn about our wild neighbors who call PWFP home and the discoveries being made through researching them.

SUMMARY:Ribbon Cutting: Harbor Drive Wellness Park
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we celebrate an incredible revitalization project\, at the Ribbon Cutting for Harbor Drive Wellness Park on June  4\, from 11 am to 1 pm. What had been an abandoned commuter lot is now a vibrant park featuring Prince William County’s first universally-accessible playground and fitness equipment designed to be enjoyed by residents of all ages and physical abilities. Guests are asked to park at Ebenezer Baptist Church (13020 Telegraph Road; map below)\, where PWC Police will direct pedestrian across Minnieville to the park. \nFestivities will include recreational activities led by Prince William County Department of Parks\, Recreation & Tourism and fun giveaways. You’ll also hear from some of the people involved in making the park a reality\, with remarks from Parks & Rec\, Kaiser Permanente (park sponsor)\, Supervisor Kenny Boddye and other community leaders. \nThe 2.5 acre park also features meadows\, a pollinator garden with interpretive signage\, programming and a one-mile paved trail that will connect pedestrians and cyclists to Kaiser’s new medical campus off Caton Hill and to the K9 Gunner Dog Park. Many of these planned features reflect community input gathered during an 18-month collaborative public design process funded by Kaiser. \n“With a walking trail\, plenty of open space\, and outdoor fitness equipment\, this new park will provide great fitness and recreational opportunities to Prince William residents\,” said Occoquan District Supervisor Kenny Boddye. “We appreciate Kaiser Permanente’s support in bringing this new park to fruition\, and to the members of County staff who have been working tirelessly on this project through these challenging times\, which have also underscored how parks can bring us together and enrich our lives.” \n**RAIN DATE Saturday\, June 11**

SUMMARY:Bee Encounter at Rippon Lodge
DESCRIPTION:Learn About Bees at the Bee Encounter at Rippon Lodge \nHumans have been keeping bees for thousands of years to help pollinate food plants. The tradition continues at Rippon Lodge where people will have the chance to observe the lodge’s beehives and learn about the practice of beekeeping. \nDuring the Bee Encounter at Rippon Lodge\, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Aug. 7\, visitors to the historic property\, at 15520 Blackburn Road in Woodbridge\, will have the chance to learn about the history of beekeeping and the intriguing life of bees. “It’s going to be a lot of fun\,” said Rippon Historic Site Manager Jessica Alicea. “We’re hoping to engage families and encourage people to plant more bee-friendly gardens at home. We have little pots with seeds for them to take home and plant in the springtime.” \nPeople who attend the event will have the opportunity to see bees at work making honey and feeding the queen. Experts will be on hand to talk one-on-one with visitors about bees and other insect pollinators. “They can actually look at a hive in the observation container\,” Alicea said. “We have beekeeper outfits\, and if people want to try them on and see how they feel\, they can. The team from Environmental Services Division Mosquito and Forest Pest Management will also be coming and talking about other pollinator insects in Prince William County.” \nYoungsters who visit Rippon Lodge will receive take-home projects as well\, Alicea said. “We’re going to have a lot of crafts and activities for the kids that are bee-related.” \nThe aim of the event is to make people aware of the role bees play. “We hope they come to understand why bees and all of our pollinators are so important to our ecosystem and what a crucial role they play into plants growing\,” Alicea said. “Without pollinators we won’t have food to eat. They’re very critical to the environment.” \nPre-register at Bee Encounter at Rippon Lodge. Admission is $10 per person for people 15 and older. Admission includes tours of the lodge. \nMasks are strongly encouraged. \n
