SUMMARY:Preventing Youth Problem Gaming and Gambling
DESCRIPTION:ARE YOUTH GAMBLING WITH THEIR FUTURE? Gaming can be fun\, but it can also be risky. Although lottery tickets and video games may seem harmless\, the risks aren’t. Many video games imitate real-life gambling behaviors. In Virginia\, lottery tickets are illegal for youth under 18.  Youth who gamble before age 12 are 4 times more likely to develop gambling problems later in life. It’s important to recognize if gaming or gambling is starting to interfere with your life. Attend a virtual one-hour workshop to learn more about how to keep gaming fun and to increase your knowledge about its connection to youth gambling. \nWho Should Attend: \n• Youth \n• Parents/Caregivers \n• Youth Serving Professionals \n• Anyone interested in learning more! \nQuestions? Contact Wendy Hunt at whunt@pwcgov.org or (703) 792-3837. \nRegister Here: https://pwc-doit.webex.com/weblink/register/r71868416c21231c66e726c5536924e69

SUMMARY:Blood Drive: Help Fill an Urgent Need
DESCRIPTION:The Red Cross has an emergency need for eligible blood donors as surgeries and other procedures ramp up as the coronavirus pandemic recedes. The next upcoming drive is: \n6/21/2021: 8 a.m. – 12 p.m.\, American Legion Post 364\, 3640 Friendly Post Ln (Woodbridge) \n \n\n\nThe need is especially great for platelet donations\, which are primarily given to cancer patients during treatment. Platelet donations must be transfused within five days and are always in high demand due to their short shelf life. \n\nPeople who have received a coronavirus vaccine can donate blood so long as they are symptom-free\, feeling well and can provide the vaccine manufacturer’s name\, according to the American Red Cross. There is no waiting period after getting a vaccine dose. \n\n\nAll blood types are needed\, especially type O\, to refuel the country’s blood stockpile for the spring and summer. \nIn most states\, donors need to be at least 17 years old\, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in generally good health; some states allow 16-year-olds to donate with parental consent. Donors 18 years old and younger need to meet certain height and weight requirements. \n\n\nDonors are asked to schedule an appointment prior to arriving at the drive. Appointments can be made via the American Red Cross Blood Donor App\, online or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS. \n\n6/21/2021: 8 a.m. – 12 p.m.\, American Legion Post 364\, 3640 Friendly Post Ln (Woodbridge)

DESCRIPTION:Question\, Persuade\, Refer (QPR)\nSuicide Prevention Training\nQPR stands for Question\, Persuade\, and Refer — the 3 simple yet powerful steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. Just as people trained in CPR help save thousands of lives each year\, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question\, persuade\, and refer someone to the help they need. Each year\, thousands of Americans\, like you\, are saying “Yes” to saving the life of a friend\, colleague\, sibling\, or neighbor by becoming a part of the QPR life-saving network. \nQPR can be learned in our 90-minute Gatekeeper training course. Gatekeepers can be anyone including parents\, friends\, neighbors\, teachers\, ministers\, doctors\, nurses\, office supervisors\, police officers\, volunteer coaches\, youth organization leaders\, caseworkers\, firefighters\, and many others who are strategically positioned to recognize and refer someone at risk of suicide. \nAs a QPR-trained Gatekeeper you will learn to:\n• Recognize the warning signs of suicide\n• Ask tough questions and offer hope\n• Get help and save a life \nThe Community Services Behavioral Health Wellness Team is offering QPR trainings throughout the year to assist our residents in helping others and broaden our QPR Network across Greater Prince William. Now\, more than ever\, it is important to reach out to our friends\, family members\, neighbors\, and colleagues to engage in health promotion and suicide prevention conversations. \nPlease use the links below to register for an upcoming QPR training. \nTuesday\, May 11 at 6:00 pm\nhttps://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJErd-yopz4tGdJeoQCYPHaeAcb4-tDQe7E7 \nMonday\, May 24 at 10:30 am\nhttps://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJIqdO2sqjovGd0zwFpuws6_LlmQH9OVo-GE \nSaturday\, June 5 at 9:30 am\nhttps://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJ0vce6gqzgrGNZWshjAG81wEK04NqaMi53d \nFriday\, June 11 at 1:00 pm\nhttps://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJYtd-mgqzopGdd2Q9CXgZIS80wQBAj8LJD7 \nWednesday\, June 23 at 4:30 pm\nhttps://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJ0ucu2sqjwpEtyZyx92IlFUwpmKo81nouu6 \nThursday\, July 1 at 10:00 am\nhttps://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJApdO-pqT4tHd3Gb1tNL0zXGu50WPuTkq9T \nFor more information contact Heather Martinsen at 571-641-7019 or HMartinsen@pwcgov.org
