SUMMARY:Clean the Bay Day
DESCRIPTION:Each year on a single day\, for just three hours\, thousands of Virginians simultaneously descend on the rivers\, streams\, beaches\, and inland parks of the Chesapeake Bay watershed to remove harmful litter and debris. Clean the Bay Day has been a staple for Virginia’s Chesapeake Bay community since its inception more than three decades ago. See our interactive map for a look at the impact it’s had over the years. A true Virginia tradition\, it is an annual opportunity for individuals\, families\, military installations\, businesses\, clubs\, and civic and church groups to give back to their local waterways. \nMORE INFORMATION ON SIGNING UP TO VOLUNTEER HERE \nImportant Information\nLook over the list of partners\, choose a partner in your area\, and register yourself or your group. From there\, your information is sent to your Clean the Bay Day local coordinator. They will reach out to assign you to a specific cleanup location. When you show up on Clean the Bay Day\, just come prepared to help pick up litter and debris. All cleanup supplies will be provided on site. \nIf you are looking to go one step further\, become a Zone Captain! Zone Captains are lead volunteers who oversee their cleanup site and other volunteers. They collect data (total weight of debris\, number of volunteers\, etc.) to report back to their local coordinator. You can volunteer as a Zone Captain during your registration. If selected\, we ask all new Zone Captains to watch a brief virtual training session and help promote the event where possible. Contact your local coordinator or us (ctbd@cbf.org) to receive the training and promotional material. It is easy and you get a cool hat! Get more details on our Zone Captain web page. \nFor questions\, please reach out to ctbd@cbf.org. \nClean the Bay Day is built on strong\, lasting relationships between dozens of cities and counties\, non-profits\, military installations\, small businesses\, and large corporations. On Clean the Bay Day we all come together for a common cause: clean water. \nWhile litter cleanup is important and accessible to all\, the Bay also faces less visible challenges\, including habitat loss\, sediment\, and nutrient pollution. Tackling these issues demands broad\, long-term commitment. Clean the Bay Day often provides that spark\, inspiring people of all ages to become dedicated stewards of their local environment.

SUMMARY:2026 Point in Time Count (PIT)
DESCRIPTION:2026 Point-in-Time Count (PIT) will be Wednesday\, Jan. 28\, 2026 overnight into Thursday\, Jan. 29\, 2026\, with Thursday\, Jan. 29\, 2026 evening also being a backup date if weather doesn’t permit the PIT count to happen on Wednesday night. \nThe PIT count is a count of sheltered and unsheltered persons experiencing homelessness that the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) requires each Continuum of Care (CoC) receiving federal funds nationwide to conduct in the last 10 days of January each year. \nThe PIT establishes the dimensions of the problem of homelessness and helps policymakers and program administrators track progress toward the goal of ending homelessness. HUD uses this information from the local PIT counts\, among other data sources\, to prepare the congressionally mandated Annual Homeless Assessment Report (AHAR). This report informs Congress about the number of people experiencing homelessness in the US as well as the effectiveness of HUD programs. On the local and regional level\, the PIT counts help CoC’s plan services and programs to appropriately address local needs\, measure progress in decreasing homelessness\, and identify strengths and gaps in their current system. \nVolunteer Registration Closed. SUMMARY:Scouting for Food: St. Matthew's Church
DESCRIPTION:This year\, Boy Scouts will again host a Scouting for Food event at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church – 12351 All Saints Place\, Woodbridge VA 22192. Boy Scout Troop 1396 and Cub Scout Pack 1364 invite the community to bring non-perishable food items to the church between 8 am to 11 am. \nIn years past bags and fliers would be distributed to homes in the area reminding residents of these efforts\, with pickups made door-to-door.  This year\, while the troops believe it is essential to continue with this campaign\, the process will be modified so that we can apply the appropriate safety precautions\, collecting food at a central location.  From there the Scouts will collect food and deliver it to Action in the Community Through Service (ACTS).

SUMMARY:Blood Drive: Help Fill an Urgent Need
DESCRIPTION:The Red Cross has an emergency need for eligible blood donors as surgeries and other procedures ramp up as the coronavirus pandemic recedes. The next upcoming drive is: \n6/21/2021: 8 a.m. – 12 p.m.\, American Legion Post 364\, 3640 Friendly Post Ln (Woodbridge) \n \n\n\nThe need is especially great for platelet donations\, which are primarily given to cancer patients during treatment. Platelet donations must be transfused within five days and are always in high demand due to their short shelf life. \n\nPeople who have received a coronavirus vaccine can donate blood so long as they are symptom-free\, feeling well and can provide the vaccine manufacturer’s name\, according to the American Red Cross. There is no waiting period after getting a vaccine dose. \n\n\nAll blood types are needed\, especially type O\, to refuel the country’s blood stockpile for the spring and summer. \nIn most states\, donors need to be at least 17 years old\, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in generally good health; some states allow 16-year-olds to donate with parental consent. Donors 18 years old and younger need to meet certain height and weight requirements. \n\n\nDonors are asked to schedule an appointment prior to arriving at the drive.
