The Missing Middle

The Missing Middle

When people hear “more housing,” many picture high-rises or massive developments that don’t fit their community.

That’s not what we’re talking about.

Missing middle housing refers to homes like:
• duplexes
• triplexes
• fourplexes
• small courtyard or cottage-style homes

These are the kinds of homes many of our older neighborhoods were originally built with. They’re human-scale, often look like large single-family homes, and blend naturally into existing communities.

Why does this matter?

Because right now, our housing choices are too limited. We’ve made it easy to build either:
• large single-family homes,
• cookie-cutter townhouses, or
• large apartment buildings

What’s missing are the homes in between — the kinds of places teachers, young families, seniors, and longtime residents can actually afford.

The Housing Fast Track Resolution prioritizes updating zoning rules so this type of housing can be considered where it makes sense, with clear standards and community input.

This is not about packing people in.

It’s about restoring housing options that once helped communities grow sustainably.

More choices.

Better fit.

Stronger neighborhoods.
