Meeting People Where They Are: Supervisor Boddye Tours Tackett’s Mill with Congressman Vindman

As part of a continued effort to learn about community needs, support local organizations, and build stronger partnerships, Supervisor Boddye and U.S. Congressman Eugene Vindman met up to speak with representatives and participants of two organizations during a March 17 tour of Tackett’s Mill in Woodbridge.

Literacy Volunteers of Prince William

Serving about 800 people per year, Literacy Volunteers of Prince William (LVA-PW) provides a holistic approach to literacy through programs that help improve English Language skills (reading, writing, and speaking), critical thinking, and health literacy. The approach encapsulates a broader understanding of literacy, encompassing both general English-based literacy skills with complex health-related information.

Boddye addressed the class, reminding everyone that Prince William County is the most diverse county in Virginia.

“Each person in this room is an important part of that story,” he said, explaining that there are many ways for newcomers to become involved in the community. He provided an example of local Afghan refugees who have started their own businesses in the County.

When one participant asked how they could support their children in America, Boddye emphasized the importance of education. He encouraged parents to stay in close contact with their children’s teachers and school counselors, who are there to help. Boddye pointed out the many opportunities available for young people, including community college, strong trade programs, and good union jobs. He shared that his own daughter is in the welding program at Potomac High School.

Another participant shared that the literacy program helped her gain citizenship and asked Boddye for his autograph.

Forever Yours

Forever Yours, LLC is a private organization that specializes in community integration for individuals with intellectual and Developmental disabilities. The organization’s goals are:

  • To provide community integration and assist with the development of natural community supports.
  • To create an atmosphere that encourages and fosters personal growth and self-advocation.
  • To create an atmosphere catered to developing the fullest potential of its participants.
  • To invest in professional growth to benefit participants and employees.

During the session, one woman tearfully thanked Boddye and  Vindman for saving her father. She explained that her father works for the County, and the raises approved by the board helped him afford to enroll her in this program. She also credited federal Medicaid expansions for providing critical support for her care.

Visits like these allow Supervisor Boddye to hear directly from staff and residents, highlight successes, identify gaps in services, and promote civic engagement that help ensure local government decisions are responsive and connected to the people they serve.

In a social media video post with Supervisor Boddye, Congressman Vindman, who also visited Prince William Conservation Alliance and Hector’s, said, “The historic Tackett’s Mill — home to my Woodbridge District Office — was the perfect setting for my ‘Get to Know Your Neighbors’ tour… to see firsthand the services and small businesses supporting the community.”
